NLD (W) Under 15's
Overview of NLD U15 & 18 Girls Programme 2013-14
CB commitments started early this year with training and trials in September and the first festival in October at Aylestone St James RFC aka "Jimmies" where both teams played some fantastic rugby. The team came away with mixed results, some lost games, close calls and resounding wins.
There was plenty of work to be done this year as both age groups had several players new to CB rugby or who had moved up an age group to U18's and the intensity and physicality that this brings. The U15's coaching team remained the same with Neil Speechley and Andrew Dowling building on where they left off last year. The U18's have seeing a complete change with Roy Reeve taking on sole coaching responsibilities.
NLD v East Midlands
The first games after the Festival saw NLD travelling away to East Midlands at Olney RFC.
The U15's got off to a good start competing well in all areas on the pitch and by half time the scores were even; two tries a piece. The second half saw NLD lose a couple of players to injury and this is where the more experienced East Midlands side began to tell putting NLD under pressure. NLD defended hard and competed to the final whistle but E.Mids came away with a close win 17/15. Although disappointed by so narrowly losing such a hard fought game the U15's came away with many positives and a solid foundation for their home game later in the month.
The U18’s game was NLD's first full length match and nerves showed conceding 2 early tries to E. Mids in quick succession. Not to be out done NLD rallied and replied with a well worked try in the corner. A hard fought battle ensued with E. Mids ending the half with a commanding lead. NLD came out fighting in the second half and replied with 2 further tries. Despite their spirited challenge NLD never recovered the lead and with E. Mids turning up the pressure conceded several try's to finish the match 19/15.
Again the disappointment was clear to see but this was a very positive start for such a young team.
NLD v Leicestershire
Sunday 24th November saw NLD host Leicestershire girls at Sleaford RFC. Smarting from their narrow defeat by E. Mids at the beginning of the month NLD U15’s came out with attitude quickly score a trio of well worked individual tries. NLD camped in the Leicestershire half putting their girls under constant pressure with the resultant mistakes punished by tries from all areas of the field and some outstanding kicking from Tess Heath. NLD finished the first half comfortably in the lead and the second half saw the Leicestershire girls come out attacking well and putting NLD under pressure. Despite stiff resistance NLD scored several more tries from within their own half and dominated the scrum. Leicestershire did themselves proud and competed right up to the final whistle as NLD racked up a convincing home win 62/0.
In the U18’s fixture NLD were under pressure from the start and conceded 2 well worked tries early on. Although we created some good counter rucking and imaginative play in the centre of the field it was Leicestershire's superiority and domination in the fowards that told and NLD battled to stay in contention. With time ticking on it was again experience that counted and Leicestershire moved ahead finishing in a decisive manner. The NLD girls battled to the end and broke Leicestershire’s line 3 times to score finishing with a respectable scoreline 17/34.
Both the U15 and U18 squads have displayed huge amounts of skill, courage, determination and teamwork in all the games they have played. All the players, both new and experienced, have gained the respect of their coaches, managers, parents and spectators through their efforts on and off the field and through their sense of fair play and sportsmanship. After the final matches at Sleaford RFC the NLD players were all presented with their NLD Pin Badges by NLD President Nick Mudd, a token of their achievement for the 2013-14 season.
The programme has been a pleasure for all involved, even in the smallest of ways, to see what it means to these players when they put on their NLD shirt and represent their CB.
Huge thanks and congratulations go to all of the NLD support and coaching staff, both new and experienced, for their professionalism, enthusiasm and dedication in time and effort in making this a successful season for both teams.
We now look forward to the Women's NLD squad and wish them every success in their 2013/14 campaign.
