NLD & County Senior Cup Competitions 2013-14
NLD Finals Day Success
On Saturday 26th April Matlock RFC hosted the NLD Senior Knockout Finals Day.
The first match of the day saw Castle Donington take on Stamford College Old Boys in the Vase Final. A close encounter saw the Lincolnshire side come out on top with a 15 points to 10 win.
The Plate Final was a more one sided affair with Boston RFC recording a convincing win over Buxton. After a close start which saw Buxton putting the eventual winners under pressure Boston crossed the try line after 25 minutes to take the lead. A further try before half time meant that the mid way score was 14-0 but after the break Boston came alive and ran in a further 5 tries which completed a hat trick for Alex Kemp and took the final score line to 41-0.
Newark were looking to better last season’s result of finishing as Runners Up to Glossop in the Shield Final as they took on local rival Kesteven in this year’s conclusion. Newark started strongly running in three good tries in the first 35 minutes of the match, with a lead of 17-0 as Kesteven started a period of pressure just before half time which resulted in the half time score reading 17-7. After the break Kesteven continued to trouble Newark but struggling with a key injury the Lincolnshire side could not fight back as Newark extended the score line with an excellent try by Nick Galinski. A further three tries before the final whistle meant that Newark recorded a convincing win with the final score line showing 43-7.
The final match of the day was the NLD Cup Final, traditionally a very exciting encounter the match did not disappoint as Ilkeston emerged Champions courtesy of a very close 10 points to 8 victory over Scunthorpe.
The first half saw the two sides exchange penalties and the half time scoreline of 3-3 promised a thrilling conclusion to a day of excellent rugby. After a period of sustained pressure the Ilkeston pack drove over the touchline for their sole try of the match, the conversion was kicked by Jack Partington which meant the Derbyshire side went 10-3 up on the scoreboard. Close and exciting play followed as the clock ticked down but Scunthorpe touched down in the corner on 75 minutes to force a close finish, a difficult conversion was missed and the scoreline did not alter again ensuring Ilkeston lifted their first ever NLD Cup.
